Golf Match News

3/7/00 – South View won the first golf match of the year by ten shots over Terry Sanford at Cypress Lakes.  South View’s score of 307 was ten strokes better the Terry Sanford’s 317.  Cape Fear finished at 321 with Pine Forest posting a 330.  Medalist for the match were Larry Hardee and Ryan Wilbur, both of South View with scores of 74. Justin Swanburg of Douglas Byrd and John Azzarelli of South View were at 75. Ronnie Christopher from Cape Fear scored a hole in one on the par 3, 140 yard, 5th hole using a 7 iron.

 3/13/00 – South View maintained its overall lead over Terry Sanford in Monday’s Mid South Conference golf match at Baywood Golf Course with a narrow 302 to 303, one stroke victory.  After two matches South View holds an eleven shot lead over Terry Sanford.  Low scores were recorded from Dell Barber (SV) with a even par 72 and Owen Brisson (TS) with a one-over 73. Tommy Baker (CF) has the lowest two match average at 75.0.  The third match in the series of eight will be held at Gates Four Golf and Country Club on Monday, March 20th with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start for the eight conference schools.

 3/22/00 – South View once again edged Terry Sanford today in the 3rd  Mid South Conference match 327 to 330.  This week the teams played at Gates Four Golf & Country Club.  South View leads Terry Sanford by 14 strokes for the conference title. The match was delayed from Monday due to rain. Cold weather and high winds inflated the scores with only two players posting scores in the 70’s.  South View’s John Azzarelli was medalist with a 76 over his home course, while Anthony Scott from Westover posted a 79.  Azzarelli has vaulted to the lead in the overall stroke average with an average of 76.0, followed closely by teammate, Larry Hardee and Tommy Baker of Cape Fear with averages of 77.0.  The fourth match in the series of eight will be hosted by E.E. Smith and be at King’s Grant Golf Course on Monday, March 27 with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.

 3/27/00 – Terry Sanford roared back from a season 14 stroke deficit and tied South View for the conference lead at the weekly golf match at Kings Grant.  Terry Sanford led by Chris Chamber’s 74 and Will Warner’s 76 shot a team 314 with South View coming in at 328.  Larry Hardee led South View with a round of 80. The battle for third place between Cape Fear and Pine Forest is close with Cape Fear holding a 21 stroke lead.  Other notable scores Monday included Eric Lester (PF) 75; Justin Swanberg (DB) 77 and John Crotts (WO) 79.  John Azzarelli (SV – 77.5 avg), Larry Hardee (SV – 77.8 avg and Tommy Baker (CF – 78.5 avg) lead in average score for the conference. The fifth match will be hosted by Westover at Pope AFB’s Willow Lakes Golf Course on Monday, April 3rd with a shotgun start at 1:00 pm.   

4/3/00 - Terry Sanford edged South View by one stroke in Monday's match held at Willow Lakes Golf Course.  Terry Sanford now holds a slim one stroke lead for the conference champioship with 3 matches to play.  Terry Sanford's 310 score included rounds of 75 by Jackson Waren, 78's by Owen Brisson and Chris Chambers and a 79 by Jonathan DeCarlo.  Medalist for the day was South View's Justin Langdon with a season low score of 70.  Tommy Baker (CF) shot 75 and Larry Hardee (SV) shot 78. Baker and Hardee are tied for individual honors in the conference with a stroke average of 77.8.  John Azzarelli (SV) is third at 78.6. The sixth match will be hosted by Seventy First at Gates Four Golf and Country Club on Monday, April 10th with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start.

  4/10/00 - Terry Sanford took a 21 stroke lead for the conference championship over South View Monday with a team 12 over par score of 300.  South View was second at 320. The match was played at Gates Four Golf and Country Club, Par 71, 6150 yards. All six Terry Sanford players shot in the 70's led by Jonathan DeCarlo at 72 (medalist), Chris Chambers 75, Owen Brisson 76 and Alec Gaines 77. South View was led by Larry Hardee 77 and Brent Snipes 78. Other notable scores were turned in by Justin Swanberg (DB) 76, Tommy Baker (CF) 77,  John Bennett (DB) 78, Eric Lester (PF) 78, Jackson Waren (TS) 78, Will Warner (TS) 79 and John Crotts (WO) 79.  Tommy Baker (CF) and Larry Hardee (SV) remained tied as the conference individual leaders with a stroke average of 77.7.  Chris Chambers (TS) is third at 78.3.  The seventh match will be played at Ryder Golf Course on Fort Bragg and hosted by Pine Forest High School.

4/17/00 - Terry Sanford extended their lead over South View, Monday, with a 4 stroke victory. The match was played at Ryder Golf Course.  Terry Sanford's 325 stroke total was lead by Jackson Waren with at 78. Jonathan DeCarlo shot 81, with 83's from Owen Brisson and Chris Chambers.  South View shot 329 lead by John Azzarelli's 80 and Justin Langdon's 81.  Other notable scores included a low round of 74 by Justin Swanberg (DB), Eric Lester (79) and Ronnie Christopher (CF) 79.  Tommy Baker (CF) and Larry Hardee (SV) continue to lead for season individual honors with a 78.4 average, with Justin Swanberg a close third at 78.7. The last conference match will be played at Highland Country Club on Monday, May 1st and will be hosted by Terry Sanford. Terry Sanford holds a 25 stroke lead over South View for the conference championship, followed by Cape Fear and Pine Forest.  The top four teams in the conference along with the top four individual players, not on one of the top four teams will advance to the regionals  on May 8 at The Bayonet Golf Course.  The Mid South teams will be joined at the regionals by the top teams from Raleigh and Durham.

5/1/00 - Terry Sanford clinched the conference championship by posting a 308 at Highland Country Club. Chris Chambers was medalist with a 74. Other notable scores were posted by Owen Brisson (TS-75), Justin Swanberg (DB-76), Eric Lester (PF-76), Justin Sarf (PF-77), Tommy Baker (CF-78), Jackson Waren (TS-78), and Justin Langdon (SV-79).  Player of the year with a 77.3 stroke average is Justin Swanberg (DB); second was Chris Chambers (TS) with a 77.6 average and Tommy Baker (CF) and Eric Lester (PF) were at 77.7. Terry Sanford, South View, Cape Fear and Pine Forest all qualified for the Mid East regional tournament on May 8 at The Bayonet at Puppy Creek. Individuals qualifying include Justin Swanberg (DB), John Crotts (WO) and Tony Slaydon (WO).
